Somewhere out there...
...was the perfect Border Collie for April and his name is 'Epic'.
DC Hob Nob Odyssey,
I gave Epic the name "Hob Nob Odyssey" because he came in a year of sad changes for
me, and I wasn't sure where
the "road of life" was going to take me next. I wanted his name to keep
reminding me that life really is a
journey, full of twists and turns. Little did I know how appropriate the name
would be for him.
When Epic came home with me, I was living in the suburbs, and obedience
competition was my main goal
for him: Epic was to be my first OTCH. Maybe I'd do a little herding with him as
long as it didn't take up
too much time, and maybe I'd show him in conformation if it was convenient.
Today, I find myself living on a
small ranch with 29 sheep, because Epic got me addicted to sheep herding. He's my
first conformation
Champion, and my first Herding Champion (an official Dual Champion, following in
his ROMX mother's
pawprints!), and we're still working towards his OTCH. We compete at the
Pro-Novice level in Border collie
trials (even won a big one once!) while we focus now on obedience.
Epic is a delight. He's sweet-natured and loving, high-drive and intense, always
ready to work, but also
able to chill out by my feet when he's worn me out. He's fun to live with,
and charms everyone who meets
him: he's never met a stranger. He loves to work with me, no matter what we're
doing, and he learns so
quickly I have to think fast to stay a step ahead of him. He lives to work
sheep, and takes it as his real
job, but obedience is a game for him that he's always ready and willing to play
with me. Anyone watching him
sees that obedience can be a blast for a dog. On the days we don't score
particularly well in the obedience
ring, people still inevitably come up to me to tell me what a nice-working dog
he is because, even on the days that his heeling is bumpy and a finish is a
little off, his attitude shows that he loves being in the ring & working with
me.
Life with Epic has definitely been an Odyssey. I
expect many more adventures to come.
